P5 - Final Radio

Introduction

In this written document, we'll be producing and editing the radio for this unit.

Rushes of Audio

The audio that has been used has been compiled into one video and uploaded to soundcloud.

With our rushes, there were segments from all of our recording we were able to use, but by breaking them up it would give us the option to take our favourite parts to make our show. We would also be able to remove any long pauses to keep the right flow we want.

Producing the Radio

In this part of the report, I will be documenting the creation and production of the radio for this Unit.
This document will be split into multiple section which are:

  • Offline Edit
  • Jingle Creation
  • Editing the Radio Segment
  • Finished Radio and Final changes
  • Edit Log

Offline Edit

This segment will be the shortest one as it will only show how the audio sounds like without any changes. Of course it will exclude the jingles, advert and other special effects as it will need to give us a base idea on what would be suitable or not before having to editing it which will in turn save us some time. In the picture below, you can see how the Offline Edit looks like in audio format. There are different peaks in the audio and it looks really unbalanced since we haven't edited it yet, but in the finalised edit those volume levels will be brought to an equal level so that it is enjoyable for listeners.

Jingle Creation

Jingles allows us to give more life to the radio by using them to establish the theme of the radio. This is a difficult part to work on since despite the show being centred around ghost hauntings but we also had to make sure that it is listenable to the audience.
We have made four different Jingles to be used throughout the radio and the longest one being for the intro which is 11 seconds long.

Intro Jingle

Evil Laugh Jingle

Door Knock Jingle

Ghost Heart Beat Jingle

Editing the Radio Segment

After looking through the offline edit and setting up the Jingles, the editing process of the radio has been started.

In the image above is the actual project file for the radio segment itself. It was put into audacity since it specialises in making and sorting the audio in a neat and organised way. Not all of the audio tracks are included since they can't all fit in at the same time. Many different techniques and effects are used in audacity with one of them being the Filter Curve EQ, which will be included in the screenshot below.

Here is one of the effects that has been edited with the Filter curve EQ. This is part of the phone call section of the radio, and it is also used in the advertisement section. In the "Presets & Settings" button at the top left, it will bring up a popup menu which will bring up another button called "Factory Presets". Pressing that button will bring back a variety of options with the one that we used being "Telephone".

In this screenshot, a popup window is shown for changing the pitch. This will be used through most of the talking segments to bring the audio to an equal level and make some jingles and special effects not too loud. In this window, all of the settings within the window are seen with different preset options being available to us.

Finished Radio and Final Changes

In the finished project, we didn't include the door knocking jingle as there wasn't a suitable place for it to be played and it didn't mix in well with other sounds present. The jingles also played a role as a transition from one clip to another which is another reason for why we didn't include the door knocking as it didn't follow that rule.
